The main goal of the BRANBOX project is to develop and implement for mass production biodegradable and environmentally safe, disposable take-away food containers providing waterproofness for at least 48 hours.
The new product, thanks to the already existing unique Biotrem technology, will be created exclusively from natural raw materials of plant origin, already available in large quantities, which are by-products or leftovers of the agricultural and food industries.
BRANBOX products will be an important and effective response to the problem of plastic waste threatening the natural environment.
The project also creates new, potentially lucrative and ethical investment opportunities and opens up new chances for the EU and global agricultural and food production sectors.
As a global population, we produce approximately 3,5 million tons of waste every day. A significant portion of this waste is disposable plastic packaging, of which only approx. 1 percent is recycled. The rest is burnt or landfilled at best, but in the worst-case scenario, it pollutes soil and water, seriously endangering the environment and life on Earth.
In 2015, global production of plastic was 448 million tons, of which over 161 million tons were disposable packaging, take-out containers, and plates, cutlery, cups. Their average usage time is estimated to be less than 6 months, often just a few minutes, but the average degradation time is over 500 years, and in many cases over 1000 years.
On 28 May 2018, the European Commission proposed a comprehensive set of measures, in the form of the Single Use Plastics Directive, to help tackle plastics waste. The Directive contains a list of plastics to be banned from the EU market from 2021, which includes single-use plastic tableware, cups and food containers.
Products manufactured through the Biotrem technology are ahead of the latest regulations regarding the environmental protection, waste management and utilisation of disposable tableware and packaging. The company provides an easy to implement solution that makes it possible quickly replace harmful plastic or paper disposables with the environmentally friendly new generation of single-use products.
Biotrem, successfully launching tableware made of wheat bran on the market, proved that Biotrem technology enables the production of disposable products that effectively replace plastic and other materials; which are functional, environmentally safe, are fully biodegradable by composting in just 30 days; and create new business opportunities for the agricultural and food industries through the efficient management of industrial by-products or leftovers.
The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 849052.
